Lucien Engelen

Lucien Engelen (1962) has worked since 2007 at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre as Head of the regional acute healthcare network. He also advises the Board in terms of changes in healthcare enhancing the participation of the patients and their informal care in their own disease, working towards raising the level of participation in Health(care), research and education. He is initiator and leader of the Radboud REshape & Innovation Center, that follows trends, creates healthcare innovations fast paced into practice, or concludes them as (for the moment) not implementable.

His motto : stop talking, start doing with Patients Included. ( http://lucienengelen.posterous.com/no-show-patients-on-conferences ) Patients want to be part of their own disease again.": He often lays out in his presentations. http://www.slideshare.net/lucienengelen

Working on the innovations and changes needed in healthcare to cope with this developments, is part of his daily practice under the REshape-program of Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, including research he initiated and leads on the level of e-health (empowered health in hís definition) More on that in video : http://vimeo.com/44823018

He initiated the movement Compassion for Care, together with students of the IFSMA (International Federation of Medical Students Association) i.e. to support medical students to change educational system to embrace participatory healthcare.

Career

At home they had several companies, from automotive, funeral services to Emergency Medical Services, he let his passion for improving health lead his career. Looking to health from both a patient and a business perspective combines his expertise together with the possibilities on i.e. the internet.

Some background :

Generation Y will force healthcare into Participatory Healthcare 24/7 on- & offline like the internet : anytime, anywhere full of choices & options.

The upcoming changes in the patient/doctor relationship, partially invoked by the internet, will migrate healthcare into a joint-venture of patient/professional. This triggers me almost on a 24/7 basis.

Health2.0 (in Dutch Zorg 2.0) reaches far beyond ICT and is in my opinion THE most challenging aspect of healthcare reform in the next 5-10 years. http://www.vimeo.com/7231823

The conferences http://www.REshapehealthcare.eu , and http://www.health20challenge.com are few other examples in 2009 and 2010.

He was initiator of the first European Medicine 2.0 conference on november 28-29, 2010 http://lucienengelen.posterous.com/medicine-20-goed-global-and-starts-where-euro

He is founder & curator of TEDxMaastricht which took place on in April 4th, 2011 under his brand: “the Future of Health.”

He is the second Dutchman who’s TEDx-talk was featured on TED.com http://www.ted.com/talks/lucien_engelen_crowdsource_your_health.html

The second edition took place on April 2nd, 2012 again in Maastricht. http://www.tedxmaastricht.com . On this occasion he gave his second TEDx-talk, on how he thinks patients should be included in every conference and aspect of change in healthcare, this time incorporated with a patient that passed away only weeks before this conference : TEDx-talk Lucien 2012

The third edition will take place on April 8th, in his University’s hometown Nijmegen

He initiated AED4.us

To improve healthcare and understand the options of crowd sourcing we've launched i.e. www.aed4.us This website allows us to collect geoposition data of AED's by the use of public knowledge. This data is available on iPhone, iPad and Android apps and hostes the Worlds’ biggest database of AED-locations.

Initiated the Community AYA4

Young Cancer Patients develop online-community, University Medical Centre facilitates. Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (RUNMC) helps young people with cancer develop their own communities. RUNMC starts with the development of AYA4 (All information You've Asked For): a unique online community for and by young people with cancer. The University hospital facilitates the technique, support and innovation, but it is the patients themselves who determine the content of the community and start filling. They create themselves a digital place where young people with cancer and their families can meet, exchange essential information, ask questions and share knowledge and feeling.

Initiated Patients Included Act.

One of the things that struck Lucien is that there is a lot of talking going on about patients without them. For that at one point he wrote a blog on it. http://lucienengelen.posterous.com/no-show-patients-on-conferences and caught up by major healthcare conferences all over the world using it now as a “quality certificate”.

Was recently interviewed by the Guardian : http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/mar/04/bright-idea-engelen-healthcare-network and the BBC : http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17373614
